Guidelines & Applications

Dilution and Safety

Though doTERRA oils are both safe and gentle, they are also incredibly powerful – and should be used with care.

  • Never apply essential oils in or near the eyes, in the ear canals, or up the nose.
  • When applying topically, always dilute with unscented lotion, milk, or a carrier oil (I recommend doTERRA’s fractionated coconut oil).
  • Always dilute for young children, expectant mothers and on sensitive skin.
  • More potent oils – like hot oils – should be diluted more strongly. Examples include: Oregano, Cinnamon, Black Pepper, Clove, Breath, Ice Blue, Cassia and On Guard.

A carrier is any oil that will carry the essential oil further. Carriers enable essential oils to be diluted and directly applied to the body.

doTERRA’s fractionated coconut oil is an incredible carrier. With a lightweight, non-greasy feel, it absorbs easily – moisturising the skin without staining clothes or leaving an odour. Better yet, it never expires!

If coconut isn’t your thing, you can substitute it with many other oils, including: sweet almond oil, apricot oil, olive oil, grape seed oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil and vitamin E.

CARRIER BENEFITS

  • Efficient transfer of essentials onto skin and into body
  • Enables safe essential oil use for all ages
  • Cost effective; 80% of a ‘neat’ essential oil will evaporate if not immediately rubbed onto skin with a carrier oil
  • Increases essential oil/blend effectiveness

Application

Essential oils and oil blends can be mixed to create your own unique blends.

Aromatic

Aromatic application involves inhalation of a fine oil mist, or an evaporated oil vapour.

Smell elicits powerful physical, mental and emotional responses. When essential oils are absorbed by smell receptors, the olfactory nerve runs directly to the limbic system – that section of our brain that supports mood, behaviour and memory. So aromatic inhalation stimulates noticeably positive effects.

AROMATIC BENEFITS INCLUDE

  • Supports nervous, respiratory, digestive and immune systems
  • Steadies hormonal and emotional balance
  • Pleasant fragrance cleanses and purifies air
  • Relieves muscle tension
  • Relaxes and clears the body and mind
  • Stimulates endorphin release and neurotransmitters
  • Promotes restful sleep
  • Reduces bacteria, fungus and mould
  • Improves concentration and focus

IDEAS FOR AROMATIC APPLICATION INCLUDE

  • Dab a cotton wool ball in oil and place it in your vehicle vents
  • Mix water and oils in a spray bottle to create a fine carpet, linen and furniture mist
  • Add oil to your next laundry wash or dryer cycle
  • Combine with household surface cleaners
  • Inhale: from the bottle, tissues, jewellery, or your hands (collect a few drops, rub your palms, cup around your nose and breathe in)
  • Drip 3 – 4 drops into a diffuser – cold air and water diffusers are most effective

Never use essential oils in an essence burner, as the heat will alter the oil chemistry and all therapeutic benefits will be lost.

Internal

The process of consuming or otherwise internalising an essential oil is labelled internal application.

Internal consumption of doTERRA oils is a safe and effective method of application, offering many health benefits.* In its concentrated form, an essential oil may be consumed in a veggie cap, or used in recipes and beverages to add aroma, flavour and dietary supplements. Because these oils are lipid-soluble, they are transferred to all organs (including the brain) efficiently.

Only oils that meet the Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade should be taken internally, as other market oils may be harmfully diluted or processed.

*Internal consumption is not recommended for pregnant women and children under the age of ten.

INTERNAL BENEFITS INCLUDE

  • Supports nervous, respiratory, digestive and immune systems
  • Aids the mouth, throat, liver and urogenital tract
  • Encourages positive overall wellbeing
  • Calorie and additive-free flavouring

IDEAS FOR INTERNAL APPLICATION INCLUDE

  • Substitute herbs and spices with oils when cooking/baking (small amount only – more potent oils should be administered with a clean toothpick)
  • Add oil to food and beverages, including: water, tea, smoothies, shakes, marinades, cream, yoghurt, sauces, dressing, cocktails etc.
  • Consume concentrated form in veggie capsule
  • Place a drop underneath your tongue

Topical

Topical application is the placement of essential oil directly to the skin, hair, mouth, teeth, nails and other mucus membranes.

Because lipid-soluble essential oils have low molecular weights they penetrate the skin easily, entering the bloodstream in thirty seconds and reaching every cell within twenty minutes – so effect is instantaneous. Once absorbed they remain in the affected area, offering a localised remedy.

Combining oil with light massage increases blood flow to the application, improving therapeutic distribution throughout the body.

Because essential oils are so strong, some may irritate the skin. Dilution with a carrier oil – like fractionated coconut oil – will ease sensitivity and increase absorption.

TOPICAL BENEFITS INCLUDE

  • Supports digestive, cardiovascular and immune systems
  • Aids muscles, bones, skin and hair
  • Cleanses surfaces naturally
  • Targets aches and soreness

IDEAS FOR TOPICAL APPLICATION INCLUDE

  • Add a few drops of oil to a warm bath
  • Create hot and cold compresses by soaking a cloth in a water/oil mixture
  • Combine essential oil with a moisturiser or lotion
  • Blend with a carrier oil in a roller bottle to target discomfort

THE BEST AREAS FOR TOPICAL APPLICATION INCLUDE

  • Forehead and temples
  • Mastoid bone (behind ear)
  • Neck
  • Wrist
  • Chest
  • Abdomen
  • Spine
  • Arms and legs
  • Soles of the feet

Never apply to the eyes and skin around the eyes, the inner ears, and broken, damaged or injured skin.
